Hawking is a type of buying and selling that has existed for
centuries. Hawkers, or street peddlers, are people who hawk and
carry goods about on the streets for sale. The hawking trade is
an informal form of economy, and is not regulated by ordinary
laws or regulations. It should have passed from existence with
the tides of formal economic growth. The number of hawkers,
however, has never decreased even after the experiencing of
rapid industrialization and urbanization. Hawking has spread
and extended in every direction, in every big city. Hawking
groups have become "the cancer of the city." They cause extreme
impacts to the environment, traffic, and commercial order,
especially in Taipei. Therfore, policies in recent years and
various research has been proposed to reach the goal of
decreasing hawkers or bringing them to an end, but none of these
has worked. The reasons for this failure are, first, people
have always greatly relied on hawkers and thus have given them
much support. This allowed hawkers to multiply and continue
their business. The second problem we encounter when dealing
with hawkers is that we lack a full understanding of hawkers,
therefore we cannot lead or guide them to a legal path. In this
thesis, we ill discuss the particular characteristics of hawkers
from the geographic view of spatial analysis in order to realize
the geographic characteristics of hawkers. We hope to get a
deeper understanding through these methods and learn how to deal
with problems of hawkers. The chief hawking groups we studied
spread into the counties, towns and districts of Taipei city.
Because they group in large numbers, they greatly affect the
environment. The total number we looked into were 228 hawking
groups. Through careful examinations and questionnaires, we
obtained valuable information. We analyzed this information to
study certain important subjects which are listed as follows:
 1. The hawking groups in Taipei, the background of their
formation, and their particular factors for location. We
separate the locations into four districts: the central
district, the inner district, the middle district, and the outer
district. 2. The formation and types of different hawking
groups. We have two objects to study: the scales and the
dominance pattern of businesses. We classify the hawking groups
into six types and discuss each of them. 3. Hawkers'''' activities
and their perceptions. The hawkers'''' activities reveal the
frequency of how often they do business, the situation of moving
their location, and the arrangements of their goods. Hawkers''''
perceptions include their willingness to do business, the merits
and the shortcomings in doing business. 4. Consumers''''
activities and their perceptions, the perceptions from loacal
people and shop owners, etc. Consumers'''' activities include the
data about the number of people in hawking groups who usually go
shopping, the distances, means of transportation, individual
perception including the reasons for liking or hating the
hawkers and the degree of their satisfaction toward different
situations, etc. 5. The impacts brought about by hawkers and
their solutions. The impacts are focused on the way we analyze
certain subjects to search for effective means to slove the
problems. Although hawking groups are confusing and
disordered, in this thesis we have found that they form an
"order" among themselves. Each type of hawking group shows its
own geographic characteristics and has a loat of geographic
singificance. If we can work to meet local demands and their
practical needs and match the surrounding geographic
environment, we shall guide the hawking groups and lead them to
become distinguished people. The will no longer be "the
cancer", and will be most welcomed by the general consumer.
