Logistics Strategy, Environmental Uncertainty, and
Organizational Performance: A Study of Taiwan''s
Information and Electronic Companies
Logistics, implying the supply chain concept, is concerned with
the planning and control of the flow of value-added activities
from procurement, production, and delivery to customer service.
Logistics strategy, involving several functional departments,
is usually classified as an integrated strategy lying between
business strategy and functional strategy.
The research on the environmental uncertainty-strategy-
performance managerial paradigm has received much attention
over the past two decades. The main thrust of past research has
been towards investigating the relationships between
environmental uncertainty and logistics strategy; and the
relationships between logistics capabilities and performance.
Few researches have yet been conducted to study the
relationships among environmental uncertainty, logistics
strategy, and performance. In recent years,
logistics activities have increasingly played an important role
in determining a company''s future competitive position. Hence,
the research on the above managerial paradigm is an important
research issue worth to pursue.
In this research, we will propose a framework of conceptual
model depicting the relationships among environmental
uncertainty, logistics strategy, and performance. Based on the
results of extensive literature review, environmental
uncertainty is represented by four dimensions including
munificence, unpredictability, variability, and heterogeneity.
For the purpose of our study, we consider both the content of
logistics strategy and the process of logistics strategy. The
former one contains capabilities o
quick response (QR) and efficient consumer response (ECR);
while the latter includes logistics activities. Both the
logistics performance and business performances are used to
measure the organizational performance.
In this dissertation, we will use questionnaire approach to
validate the proposed conceptual model. We will focus primarily
on information and electronic industry in Taiwan. The
questionnaire was developed based on literature review and
modified by conducting a series of in-depth interviews. LISREL
model is then applied to perform the confirmatory factor
analysis to confirm the significance of the relationship among
munificence, unpredictability, variability, heterogeneity,
logistics strategy, logistics
activities, logistics performance, and business performance.
The result of the test of goodness of fit confirmed the
validity of the proposed conceptual model.
Main empirical findings in this research can be summarized as follows:
1. While munificence affects both logistics capabilities and
business performance; variability impacts only logistics
activities.
2. Logistics activities will affect logistics capabilities.
3. Both logistics capabilities and logistics activities will
affect the logistics performance.
4. The logistics performance will influence the business performance.
5. Although both logistics capabilities and logistics
activities are related to the logistics performance; however,
only munificence is related to logistics capabilities and
variability is related to logistics activities. Meanwhile,
munificence is related to business performance; therefore,
logistics strategy is only a partial mediator.
