Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the meaning of recurrent dreams. The researcher gathered information by dream interpretation interviews with 7 dreamers and their 30 dreams, using Clara Hill’s cognitive-experiential dream model and with qualitative research method. The research finding is described below:
1. Recurrent dreams that occurred during kindergarten and elementary school period mostly reflected trauma experiences related to the parents.
2. The multiplicity of the dreams increased when the recurrent dreams occurred during the period of junior and senior high school.
3. Recurrent dreams that first occurred during elementary school or junior high school period and that lasted through college mostly reflected the early trauma experiences and emotions related to the long-term interaction with the parents.
4. Short-lasting recurrent dreams reflected specific emotional issues at different life stages.
5. The few positive and joyful recurrent dreams generally were wish-fulfilling dreams that expressed what was missing in the real life at the time.
6. Recurrent dreams represented themselves through metaphorical expressions.
7. The issues reflected by the recurrent dreams were mostly dealt by the dreamers with repression.
8. The discontinued recurrent dreams often meant that the issues reflected by the dreams had been resolved or alleviated, with only two exceptions.
