Our research adapted the experiment design and examined the user’s public awareness under non-visual anonymity and visual-anonymity situations. It is proposed that user’s public awareness under non-visual anonymity would be higher than the public awareness under visual-anonymity situation when they were acquainting with others by text-based communication on the Internet. There is no significant difference in private-awareness under either non-visual anonymity or visual-anonymity situations. Furthermore, for male communicators, higher public awareness in anticipated future interaction situation would be evoked than non-anticipated future interaction situation. For female communicators, higher public awareness would be evoked in non-anticipated future interaction situation than in anticipated future interaction situation. Females also get higher public awareness than male in the same situation. There is no difference in private awareness in different anticipation of future interaction in different gender.
This research also examined the online self-disclosure behaviors with different level of public and private awareness. Results suggested that users under high public awareness with low private awareness, and low public awareness with high private awareness would have higher self-disclosure behaviors than high public awareness with high private-awareness, and low public awareness with low private awareness. When communicators within the online acquainting situation, the more appropriate self-disclosure they made, the more trust they would get in this interpersonal relationship. Beside, our research also examined the communicator’s perceived self-disclosure is positively correlated with the satisfaction of interpersonal relationship.
