This dissertation deals with three main issues. The first issue is related to the tense and aspect in Japanese and Chinese narratives. Specifically, it focuses on the -ru/-ta alternation and the use of -tei in the Japanese data, with the uses of -ru, -ta, -tei-ru, and -tei-ta in the sentence-final positions examined in various scenes in the written narratives. To contrast the difference in tense and aspect between Japanese and Chinese, it also examines the use of the aspect markers le, zhe, and zai in Chinese. The data from the Japanese group reveals that the use of -tei-ru tends to increase in several scenes. In contrast, the Chinese-speaking learners of Japanese do not tend to use -tei-ru in the same scenes.
The second issue focuses on how connective expressions are used in Chinese and Japanese in different scenes in the written narratives. An intriguing contrast that is found in the results is that Japanese speakers prefer to use temporal-conditional to/suruto (or to/suruto construction), whereas Chinese speakers tend to use temporal shi/zhege shihou. The learners’ data suggests that Chinese-speaking learners of Japanese do not (or probably cannot) use conditional-temporal to/suruto.
The third issue is concerned with noun-modifying constructions in Chinese and Japanese, with the focus being on scene transitional noun-modifying constructions, which integrate two sequential events into a single noun-modifying construction. The results of the comparison between Chinese and Japanese noun-modifying constructions suggests that Japanese speakers have a preference for scene transitional noun-modifying constructions, whereas Chinese speakers do not have a preference to complex-structured noun-modifying clauses.
The contrast between Chinese and Japanese narratives is highlighted by adopting cognitive linguistic theories. The significant role of subjective construal is confirmed in the Japanese narrative data, but not in the Chinese data.
