The study aims to employ Neil Postman’s theories to explore the roles of media literacy and media ecology in Taiwan’s university education. The first part of this research focuses on Postman’s three central ideas, namely, “humanism”, “grand narrative”, and “education” and concludes that Postman does not hold a pessimistic view of technological determinism. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of “religiositat” in the development of the spirituality of human beings and the responsibility of the general pubic intellectual. Secondly, through interviewing university teachers and students as regards the influence media literacy, the result shows that TV is still the medium that exerts the highest impact on university students. But the lack of a guiding grand narrative means the critical voices cannot actually lead to any action. Moreover, while media literacy put much stress on the ideas of protectionism and empowerment, Postman thinks a balance should be struck between the subversive views and the more conservative ones. Finally, since for Postman, what enables a person to think is the change of his mind, his theories can be seen as a way to help media literacy head in the direction of cultivating the viewers’ mind.
