ABSTRACT
This dissertationinvestigates the massive transformation in the human-technology relationship in science fiction. It traces the spectrum of the human attitude totechnology, from fear and distrust to wholehearted integration.
In recentyears technology has encroached exponentially into all areas of the humanexperience, a process which will inevitably continue yet more rapidly in thefuture. As this progress escalates, in our eagerness to improve the humancondition, we are in danger of forgetting what it means to be human. The boundaries of human identity are beingredefined as we confront technologies which we do not fully comprehend, thetechnological sublime. Inthe light of postmodern theories, this dissertation examines experiences with the technologicalsublime in science fiction.
Emerging technology in any era is always adouble-edged sword, bringing the promise of the further liberation of humanityfrom its physical limitations whilst usurping facets of human agency.  This dissertation will analyze encounters withthe technological sublime from the Industrial Revolution to the Digital Age andbeyond.  It will focus on Samuel Butler’sErewhon (1872), Don DeLillo’s White Noise (1985) and Cosmopolis(2003), and William Gibson’s Neuromancer (1984).
This dissertation explores how science fiction breaksdown the barriers between the human and the non-human, thus allowing us toexamine new perceptions of human identity. The dissertation demonstrates thatparanoid and posthuman standpoints are both crucial when encountering thetechnological sublime.
