This essay first studies "Jiao-liao fti" by Zhang Hua (232-300) and then considers two related fu. "Yi-feng fu" by Fu Xian (239-294) and "Peng fu" by Jia Biao (dates unknown). These three fu show different ideas, all of which have a close relationship to the development of philosophy in the Western Jin (265-312). In order to explicate the rich meaning of Zhang's "Jiao-liao fu", this study is divided into six sections: 1.The topic and theme of "Jiao-liao fu [Wren Rapsody]." 2.The political background of the Western Jin and Zhang's intention in writing "Jiao-liao fu." 3. Why Ruan Ji praises Zhang Hua for "Jiao-liao fu." 4.The three views of life represented by the birds selected for the fu by Zhang, Fu and Jia. 5.The consistency between Zhang's "Jiao-liao fu" and Guo Xiang's commentary on Zhuangzi. 6.The role which Zhang's fu plays in the development of Chinese thought and literature.
