　　　　　The paper is divided into three psrts. The first part briefly examines problems in the representation of regional popular culture. The second part looks at the role of cults in creating regional networks, and examines alternative understandings of spiritual power. The third part explores the distribution of a particular cult, that of the Lufu or Bureau of Smallpox, in the Putian region of Fujian province. The paper contributes to collective efforts to identify the principal modes of organization of regional cults, the modes of transmission of trans-regional cultural features, and the specific social bases of particular cults. The paper develops a vectorized conception of space and argues that cultural forms such as regional cults are ceaselessly engaged in a transformative positioning (or topology). The paper suggests that all claims for the unity of culture-or for the eternal, abiding essence of Chinese culture-are in face political claims for cultural hegemony. Next, a Qing Putian literati's views on the distinct forms of spiritual power underlying different kinds of cults is discussed. Several others examples of conflicting claims on spiritual power within different phases and classes of Putian social history are given, including an extended discussion of the Bureau of Smallpox, the headquarters of the guardians against smallpox, measles, and other childhood diseases. These spiritual powers include exorcistic and healing powers. The paper concludes by suggesting that the mapping of the transforming local ritual machines (cults, local ritual traditions, etc.) for the production, capture, and transductions of spiritual force (ling) can contribute to a topology of power in local popular culture.
