本文旨在探討「城市空間結構與長距離貿易之間的關係」，即建構「貿易模型在都市體系地理安排上的重要性」。鑑於中地理論受限於靜態且內向模型的不足，未能考慮到外來力量對都市體系的影響，以及當前全球財政權力集中於少數大都會區的趨勢下，都市體系變化之理論基礎，較少作周延之探討。因此，本文乃先明確指出「中地理論的兩個限制」；其次，探討「貿易模型的要素」；復次，回顧分析「主要的質易路線」，並以北美地區為對象，進行分析；再復次，探討「都會區的支配性與貿易活動都市體系之間一致性」的問題；最後，則提出「城市空間結構、長距離貿易模型、與都會區支配性三者間的關係」，以作為說明、解釋、及驗證北美地區都市體系空間結構發展的依據。
The purpose of this paper was to explore the relationships between city spatial structure and long-distance mercantile model. Central place theory was criticized for its lack of dynamics and outward-looking in depicting development of city spatial structure. And, it was the fact that the importance of metropolitan dominance owing to great financial power on today's urban system. In this paper, two limitations of central place theory were clearly pointed. Elements of the mercantile model were explored. The principal mercantile alignments concerning North America were reviewed and analyzed. The spatial correspondence between metropolitan dominance and mercantile model was also explored. Finally, the relationships between city spatial structure, long-distance mercantile model and metropolitan dominance were proposed.
