This article discusses the characteristics, origin and main issues of the speculative philosophy of history. The speculative philosophy of history treats history as a meaningful whole and explains history from the points of worldview; it is a metaphysical study of history. Incorporation with the analytical school, the speculative philosophy of h istory is more closely linked to the philosophy as philo—sophia (to love wisdom). However, the philosophy of history did not begin with Greek philosophy; it originated in Christianity, it is secularized in the modern time. The transition from Greece to Christianity is accompanied by the transition from the cyclical pattern of history to the linear pattern of history. The Christian theory of progress is wrapped in the theory of providence. The modern philosophy of history reduces the uifion of providence to nature and reason. The writer maintains that, though the meaning of human life does not depend on the meaning of history, the metaphysical debate about the progress and meaning of history is indeed a way of life and promotes the progress of human life. The speculative philosophy will endure as long as the meaningful human life exists. It will not disappear.
