The purpose of this study were to discover the characteristics of elite player’s somatotype regarding different playing positions and compare the differences n the somatotope of elite basketball player at different playing positions. Sixty elite women’s basketball players aged 21.72+3.80 years old, were divided into five teams according to its playing positions. The Health –Carter Anthropometric method was used as a measure for the somatotype judgement. The results indicated as follows, all positions have significant differences (p<0.01). From the somatotype’s view, point guard averages 4.14-2.13-2.16, shooting guard averages 3.78-1.83-3.11, small forward averages 4.30-178.32.23, power forward averages 4.31-3.58-2.88, center forward averages 4.80-3.10-3.00. The total average for somatotype is 4.27-2.47-2.86, which formed an endomorph. The players experimented showed a certain degree of difference in their 3 components of somatotype between different positions, but there is no significant statistical value (p<0.05). This study gives the scientific evidence for the selection of the elite team. At the same time, provides more data for related study that concerns human growth process and somatotypes connection with sports. It has a tremenedous practical value.
