This paper explores and discusses some critical issues in knowledge management,
including what are the purposes of knowledge management, the subjects to be managed, the scope
to be covered, the type of knowledge to be managed and what stage in the flow of knowledge
management is intended. This paper compares and contrasts the different emphases between the
library and information science perspective and the practice community of the business world, and
suggests a conceptual framework to follow when the company is planning for knowledge
management. At last, the author proposes some important research issues in this domain from a
library and information science perspective.
