This paper investigates two correlative constructions, yue ... yue... and zai ... ye ! ..., in Mandarin Chinese. It is shown that they share many semantic and syntactic properties. Both of the constructions at issue are used to express a link between two variables, one independent and the other dependent. Besides, it is argued that both zai and the first yue occur in the topic portion of a sentence, while ye ! and the second yue occur in the comment part of the sentence. Finally, yue and zai have to cooccur with quantifiable predicate phrases, but ye ! , with a wider scope of modification than yue or zai, is not subject to the same constraint.
