五言律體完成於沈佺期、宋之問及杜審言等人。杜氏屬對精工，氣象開闊，論者推為五律作手。本篇先介紹作者的遭遇、個性、交遊，蓋作品之風格即其人格之反應，有助於對其詩風的理解。杜氏詩著重鍊字琢意，文法活潑、涵義豐富。其風格上之主要表現為：(一)講究鍊字藝術：1.對句雖白描，有雙關的蘊含。2.好用「獨」、「坐」等字。 3.末聯有明顯的呼應和收束。(二)工整華麗的形式。(三)偶見戲謔篇章。詩的氣象，是情感與自然的磅礡結合。杜詩氣象渾偉自然，是肇立以後五律格高體尊的因素。初唐氣象開闊的背景是南北一統，人人進取，政府興學崇文。其具體的原因為：(一)風氣開放，文人創作自由。(二)諷諫獻賦獻詩，克獲獎助。(三)同僚唱和，寵則同慶，眨則互相慰勵。杜氏詩的特質即在其氣象，尤其是其中的情意象轉。其氣象的表現為：(一)雄偉而沈鬱。(二)悲涼而奮起。(三)送行詩鼓舞啅厲。(四)首聯直接喚醒的親切效果。又五律(和晉陵陸丞早春遊望)，向來備受矚目，元明以來認為杜審言的名篇，明胡應麟稱之為「初唐五律第一」。此篇首聯警拔，頷頸二聯描寫早春光景之鮮活變化，奏靈巧，氣象弘曠。近年學者考證以為應係韋應物之作，元以後作者之名始遭訛傳。然尚有學者在賞析時保留元明舊說，置於於杜氏名下。

Normalized poems of five characters (五律) were established by Shen Quan-Qi (沈佺期), Shong Zhi-Wen (宋之問) and Du Shen-Yan (杜審言) etc. Du was praised the “the great important poet in normalized poems of five characters in early Tang” by Hu Ying-Lin (明．胡應麟) in the Ming dynasty. We know that it was important in the developmental history of normalized poems, for the articles just reflect one’s minds and characters. This essay will introduce the experiences, characters and companies of Du Shen-Yan. And while comparing the poems of Du Shen-yan, I would discover Du’s styles of qualifying and polishing in words, there are as follows: 1.It contains straightforward styles of writing in antithetical couplets abut contains expression with double meaning. 2.He prefer to use the words like“獨”(singly, only), “坐”(sit, unconsciously) in his sentences. 3. To show echo with the first couplet in the last couplet is a feature of his poems. The background of open atmosphere in early Tang was unifying the Southern and Northern，keeping forging ahead popularly, and establishing academies and advocate literature and art by the government. The atmosphere of poet is boundless combination of emotions and the nature. The causes are: 1.The Writer could cerate free due to open social mode. 2. Presenting fu (odes 賦) and poetry and mocking, admonishing could catch the reward. 3. The fellow officials chanted and replied each other, celebrated while their career were smooth, consoled and stimulated while they were relegated. The atmosphere of poet is boundless combination of emotions and nature. The distinguishing characteristics of Du’s poems just were showed on it’s atmosphere, especially on it’s emotion transferring. The expressions of atmosphere are: 1. Grand but deep 2. Dismal but promising 3. Inspired and hopeful in articles of escort (wishing friends bon voyage) 4.Direct awaking in first couplet came into personal experiences. The atmosphere of great, natural and vigorous on Du’s poem had made honorable structure and graceful style in normalized poem of five words. “Replying Jinlin officer Lu’s ‘Touring and gazing in early Spring’” were regarded as a piece of Wei Ying-Wu’s poem in middle Tang by the scholars recently. But some reviewers think it was the works of Du Shen-Yan just like the statements of scholars after the Yuan think it was the works of Du Shen-Yan just like the statements of scholars after the Yuan and Ming dynasty, for the style of this poem seemed stand for maturity of Normalized poems of five characters.
