In the knowledge economy age, "knowledge" has become the most important assets to the corporation. The aim of this study is to investigate: 1.What kind of knowledge and skills must special librarians have in the age of knowledge management? 2.What are the core competencies of special librarians? 3.What kinds of training is missing at this moment? 4.How can the curriculum of library and information science be readjusted in order to meet the demand of the market? A questionnaire survey and focus group interview was conducted with the members of Special Library Committee, Library Association of China. Suggestions will be made to build up the new competencies for the library professionals and curriculum development in library and information science programs.
