撰寫偉大作曲家和演奏家的傳記向來是歷史音樂學中最常被運用的方法之一,而此一方法近來被一些民族音樂學家及人類學家採用,並以此記述非西方社會中重要的作曲家和演奏家。無論是歷史音樂學家、民族音樂學家或人類學家的使用,傳記寫作是描述音樂家生平事蹟極為有效的方法。相較之下,對於樂器的研究 (樂器學) 則通常針對物質性、歷史、構造、分類法與近來的表演環境為焦點。這兩種研究途徑似乎彼此根本不同,前者關注於人,而後者則在物。 著眼於當代琴人的生平及其樂器,我將在本論文中呈現台灣張清治教授的個案研究。對於張清治教授的生平不能僅就其個人的敘述來了解,而須和他收藏老琴的過程一起加以解釋。本論文也將同時展現「琴」(泛指此一樂種或特指張教授的老琴收藏) 是如何無法分割地和這位重要琴人的生平、學術界生涯、演奏活動、和當時社會的變遷糾纏在一起。個人的音樂觀點向來被視為是這類寫作中心部份,的確在描寫這額個人生平講述中是重要且不可取代。然而,他們所演奏與擁有的樂器也應在事蹟陳述中有一席之地,因為這些樂器也許能反應出某些關於人們的隱匿軼事。本論文將從傳記以及樂器學的角度,探討 (這些) 樂器以及與它們息息相關的人們,兩者之間的緊密關係。
Writing a biography of a great composer or performer appears to be one of the popular approaches in historical musicology, and this approach has been adopted recently by some ethnomusicologists and anthropologists in writing the biographies of important composers or per­formers in non-Western societies. Whether used by historical musicologists, ethnomusicologists, or anthropologists, a biographical approach is a powerful way of portraying the life story of a musician. In contrast, the study of musical instruments, or organology, has often focused on materiality, history, construction, classification, and recently, performing con­texts. These two approaches seem to differ from each other, with the former focusing on humans and the other on objects. In this paper, however, focusing both on the instruments and on the life of a contemporary qin琴player, I will present a case-study of Professor Chang Ching-chih張清治 (b.1940) from Taiwan, whose life should not only be understood as his own personal account, but also be interpreted together with the process of his antique qin collecting. This paper will also show how the qin, as a musical genus in general, and through Professor Chang’s collection of antigue qin in particular is inextri­cably entangled with the life story of the master player, together with his academic career, performing activities, and social change. Musical aspects of an individual, which are often regarded as a central component in writ­ing of this kind, are indeed important and crucial in the discourse of describing an individual’s life story. Nevertheless, these particular musical instruments that they play and own should also have a place within the storytelling since they may also reflect some hidden stories of people This paper will give attention to biographical and organological writings in order to reconsider the relationship between musical instruments and the people who are entangled with them.
