This article is an introduction and review of the first psychoanalytical application in China. The subject is Mr. Pun Guang Dan’s study of the woman poet Feng Xiao Qing of the late Qing conducted in 1922, about her life, her psychology and her work. It first introduces the methodology of Pun’s psychoanalysis on Feng and traces the origin of his approach. It then compares Freud’s notion of ”narcissism” with Pun’s understanding of the term to understand and discuss his appropriation. It is realized that the attempt made by Pun was brave under the cultural and social situation in China in his time. The study will also highlight the living of Chinese women in the feudal Chinese society at the turn of the century and reflect on Pun’s social consciousness of the attempt. Finally, the article will also discuss the contemporary reflection of Freud’s psychoanalysis 9which was closely followed by Pun) by the new women psychology and its gender discourses.
