The major subject of my paper is to investigate the role of environmental history and it' s relationship with globalization under the spatial concept of globe. The analysis is based on the works of Roland Robertson, who provides us some useful theories to understand the issues of globalization, and Alfred W. Crosby, whose studies show that the historical research on environment can contribute another perspective for reading human history. In order to demonstrate the purpose, my paper starts from the definition of globalization, and then follows the analyses on the works of Alfred W. Crosby, and the meaning of holding the global environmental conferences by UN in the last three decades. Finally, I argue that since the ‘environmental issues’ are so crucial for understanding the globalization, it should be treated as an independent factor in dealing with globalization beside the economic, political, and cultural dimensions. I also suggest that the environmental history as a research field can help us to attain the goal, and environmental historians should notice the foundations of time and space as influential factors in the environmental changes, and so be cautious to avoid of doing researches with reductionism and nationalism. In addition, I claim in my paper that it is time for more historians in Taiwan to devote their time to the research of environmental history under the current process of globalization.
