自民國85年，銀行業即掀起了一股購併風潮，但大多數的購併案例都是為了配合財政部的政策下，所完成的救濟型合併案例。而在「金融機構合併法」立法完成後，一般預料將會掀起另一波購併風潮，銀行業的購併行為是有助於銀行日後的經營績效，目前仍然沒有一個肯定的答案，過去的相關研究也並未獲得一致的結論。 本文除了延續過去的研究方法外，並針對目標進行研究，本文實證結果顯示銀行購併目標以資產與產出規模較大的被購併銀行為宜，這個結果與Shawky et al.(1996)的結果並不一致，推論這可能是因為購併時間長短的影響；而在購併前後效率變化方面，由於統計量不顯著，因此購併行為並不能改善銀行效率；而在規模經濟與範疇經濟方面，各銀行皆存在規模經濟，但卻不存在範疇經濟；而在擴張路徑規模經濟部分(EPSCE)，則由於各分組銀行統計量均不顯著，因此若以EPSCE=1來解釋，顯示各分組銀行處於最適生產規模(固定規模報酬)，未來銀行即使擴張規模也不能夠增加規模經濟。 綜合上述，顯示銀行合併絕非銀行經營效率的保證，就本文的實證結果，顯示銀行購併並沒有明顯的改善經濟效率，而且當銀行規模擴充時，銀行規模經濟並不存在，呈現固定規模報酬。
