奧圖的審美教育理論深受席勒審美育理論、赫爾巴特審美教學理論、馬克斯美學思想、海曼實證教學理論和阿多諾美學理論的影響，從實證教育學的觀點出發，主張審美教育是一種在藝術、文化價值一般事物的知覺、實現和詮釋過程中，有關知識獲得、技能訓練和行為改變的活動。強調審美育具有導向藝術、導向實在導向社會的功能，不僅正面的肯定審美教育的價值，而且對藝術在審美教育中的地位也非常重視。奧圖將審美育的重心放在教學理論的研究上，應用實證分析的方法探討審美教學理論的問題，對審美教學理論的建立貢獻很大。
Gunter Otto’s theory of aesthetic education deeply affected by Schiller’s theory of aesthetic education, Herbart’s theory of aesthetic instruction, Marx aesthetic thought, Heimann’s theory of empirical instruction and Adorno’s aesthetic theory, embarks from the empirical pedagogy viewpoint, advocated the aesthetic education is one kind in artistic, the cultural value and in general thing consciousness, the realization and the annotation process, the related knowledge obtains’ the skill training and the behavior change activity. Emphasized the aesthetic education has three functions of the guidance art, the guidance reality with guidance society. He’s not only the positive affirmation the value of aesthetic education, moreover also extremely takes to art in the aesthetic education status. Otto puts the center of gravity of aesthetic education on the research of instructional theory, he apply the method of empirical analysis to discuss the problem about theory of aesthetic instruction, will be very big contribution to the establishment for theory of aesthetic instruction.
