This study investigated the kinetics of the lower extremity of elite handball athletes' typical cutting maneuver under five different directions (0° straight run, sidestep to the range of 10°, 30°, 50° and 70°). Seven male elite handball players were tested during fast running (4.5~5.5m/s) and then performed cutting to the left off. Their mean age, height and weight were 22±1.19years, 1.77±0.05m, 78.42±8.26kg. A Mega high-Speed camera (60Hz) synchronized with an AMTI force plate (1200Hz) were used to collect the relative parameters of braking legs during cutting maneuvers. A Mega High-Speed camera was used to record the 2D kinematics. Two-dimensional coordinates were derived by a video analysis system (APAS motion analysis system) to gain the kinematics parameters of human lower extremity. Each participant's braking leg (right leg) was modeled as a system of rigid bodies. The inverse dynamics approach was used to integrate the body segment parameter, kinematics and kinetics data, and to solve the resultant lower joints forces and moments. The results were as follows. Performing sidestep cutting maneuver would produce the peak of ground reaction force, the peak of the net joint moment and the force of lower limb joints in braking phase increased more according to the increase of cutting angles. Specifically, the shear forces of knee joint were produced between 638.18N to 1197.65N in braking phase during five cutting maneuvers. The shear forces of knee joint were never large enough to produce knee joint injuries of 2000N (Woo, Hollis, Adams, Lyon, & Takai, 1991) during cutting maneuver. Whereas this shear force was not to neglected, performing sidestep cutting maneuver would produce long-term knee joint injury.
