The sensitive reaction and agility towards market change of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is one of the main reasons for Taiwan's fast trade and economic growth. Currently, “export” definitions and scopes of various governmental statistics are quite broad. Therefore it is a challenge to understand the truth of SMEs export. To make an overall analysis on SMEs export contribution, and provide concerete suggestions for counseling policy, beginning from clarifying the essence of various survey information is necessary. In this paper: 1) View the dedinition of various export statistical information. 2) Analyze SMEs various export ways and values. 3) Examine the relationship between export value change and of export ways. 4) Analyze the reason for SMEs export contribution rate decrease. Recent survey results are the following. In regard to SME's indirect export estimates, the ratio of trade export products in 2003 from SMEs is 66.17%. The ratio of large enterprises that manufacture and export products from SMEs in Taiwan is 13.49%, further research on SMEs manufacture product sale channels is recommended. Globalization may be the main influence for the decrease of SMEs direct export contribution rate, especially since globalization development is advantageous for large enterprises to setup overseas. Through the combination of international resources and distribution routes, the impact of market competition and undulation can be decreased for large enterprises, and thus results in better development basis and competitiveness. The above reasons encourage the grow of large enterprises' direct export rate, which are possible causes for the decrease of SMEs export contribution rates.
