In this reflection on man’s desire to know, Lonergan emphasizes the fact that there is a transcendent exigence heading for a religious conversion. As to the question whether man’s transcendent exigence may open up for different stages of mystical insight, Longergan does not seem to concentrate much attention on this aspect. But, this lacuna may possibly be filled up if we visualize an encounter of Lonergan’s system with St. John of the Cross’ theory on contemplation.
