在組織與策略的研究中，有關於廠商規模、年齡、成長與績效之間的關係，始終是學者們關注的重點。本描述性研究以個別廠商為分析單位，去檢視廠商的人口統計變項，特別是規模和年齡這兩個變項，對於廠商成長的影響。本研究認為，組織生態學中的慣性觀點，對於廠商的各種不利生存性的假說，同樣可以推論到對於廠商成長的影響上，因此進行相關實證分析。本研究利用1995年至2004年期間，台灣證券交易所的252家上市上櫃公司資料，實證探討廠商的人口統計變項對於廠商成長的影響，以及廠商成長與廠商績效之間的關係。研究結果發現，廠商規模與廠商成長呈正向顯著關係；廠商年齡與廠商成長呈負向顯著關係；廠商規模對於廠商年齡與廠商成長有正向的效果；而廠商成長與廠商績效則呈倒U形的曲線關係。

The relationships between firm size, age, growth, and performance have been central research topics for organization and strategy research. This paper differs from traditional organizational ecology research by shifting the unit of analysis from population level to firm level, to examine the relationships among different demography variables of firms, specifically, firm size, age, growth and performance. It argues that the organizational inertia hypotheses on the liability of organizational survival can be incorporated to explain the growth of the firm. By using a balanced panel data of 252 non-financial-sector companies publicly listed in the Taiwan Stock Exchange Market, over the period of 1995-2004, this paper empirically investigates the relationships of firm size, age, growth and performance. Statistical results show that, firm size is positively associated with firm growth; firm age is negatively associated with firm growth; while the age and size interaction effect is positively associated with firm growth. Statistical results also suggest the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between firm growth and performance.
