運動訓練可以改善心臟構造、功能而增加心肺耐力,是目前大部份研究所支持的。而不同血管緊張素轉換酶基因型(angiotensin-converting enzyme geno type, ACE geno type)與運動員心臟的構造、功能及耐力運動表現的關係,至今仍未確定。目前已知ACE基因型有II、ID及DD三型,其座落在染色體17q23的位置上,可由靜脈抽血進行分析其基因型與活性。文獻上指出,ACE的DD型可能伴隨高血脂、左心室的肥厚、心血管疾病、高血壓、肥胖、第二型糖尿病及腎臟疾病有關,而ACE的II型可能與耐力型運動表現相關程度較高,所以有較高比例的自由車、長跑選手是ACE的II型,或ACE的II型具有較高的最大攝氧量,而ACE的ID型則介於II型與DD型之間,亞洲人有較低比例的ACE基因DD型,但目前仍需更多的研究證據支持以上的說法。
