運動的強度和持續的時間是造成白血球及其亞群數目變化的關鍵,而白血球中的嗜中性球和淋巴細胞分別扮演先天性和適應性的免疫功能。因此運動誘發這些細胞數目的改變,可能會導致免疫功能的變化,而在綜合不同運動強度、型態恢復期白血球數目變化的文獻後,發現 (1) 從事單次運動,不論強度均會誘發嗜中性球的增加,增加的現象會持續至運動恢復期,而淋巴細胞及其亞群數目在長時間和激烈運動中會增加,但運動後恢復期則會低於運動前基礎值。(2)訓練不會改變基礎值淋巴細胞數目,顯示隨著運動負荷強度的增加體內免疫功能達到適應的現象。(3)在激烈運動後進行較低強度的動態恢復,能維持白血球數目及緩和淋巴細胞數目減少。(4) 運動造成白血球數目改變可能原因來自:淋巴細胞的遷移、賀爾蒙的影響、嗜中性球和淋巴球的外滲作用及誘發淋巴細胞凋亡。 激烈運動後從事低強度動態恢復能緩和恢復期淋巴細胞數目減少的趨勢,至於其亞群數目及功能上的影響仍未證實,仍有待進一步研究來加以釐清。
