The fiction writing, employed by Zhu Xi-Ning during the middle of 1960s and early 1970s, was extremely different from his other works. At that time, Zhu Xi-Ning preached changes in art and experiments on the genre. His emphasis focused in forms and styles rather than themes and contexts. He was then extolled as "The First Writer of New Fiction in Taiwan" by certain critics. We are not going to argue how to position the writer into history. However, we will explore the meaning of Zhu Xi-Ning's literature experiment by probing into the way of his change and the outcome presented. In this article, we observe all kinds of steps he engaged in writing 「New」 Fiction. We reveal the goal of the experiment is to prove 「Fiction itself aims to be a game of words. We should let readers know the fictitious essence of fiction and walk out soberly.」 We also confirm that Zhu Xi-Ning's characteristic then is: The ultimate goal of 「Fiction as experimentation」 is 「Fiction as Linguistic Experimentation」; and the final objective of linguistic experimentation is 「Language as Structure」 and 「Language as Content」, which culminates in 「Language as Virtuality and Game」. In the end, we follow how Zhu Xi-Ning regarded his experiment afterward and why the experiment stopped suddenly from varied perspectives such as the goal of art, esthetics of fiction, and writing skills. Judging from the above, though this 「experiment」 may be seen as a novelist's vocation in search of 「probability of novelistic discourses」, we can conclude that the positive or negative gaps between the outcome of experiment and the objective of writing may not necessarily be determined by 「vocation」 per se. Consequently, the termination or transformation of 「change」 in a certain kind of 「literature」 proclaims the beginning of another 「change」.
