"The Book of Odes", one book of the Five Classics, has been an extremely important classic in China since the ancient time. It not only has the value of literature, but also is important information for studying history, society, culture, systems, languages and characters of Chou Dynasty. "The Book of Odes" was written earlier during the period of Western Chou Dynasty and the middle Spring and Autumn Period. Later, the "Preface to The Book of Odes" of the Confucian school had their own unique style of interpretation. The controversies over "The Three Schools of the Songs" (an up-to-date classic writing) and "Mao Poetry" (an ancient writing) plus the arguments of scholars about the meanings of "poetry" in the past have made "The Book of Odes" being regarded as a classic with the most complicated meanings and philosophical connotations in the Five Classics. However, the difficulty in understanding "The Book of Odes" is mostly because of the different backgrounds of times. to probe into the meanings of those ancient songs in "The Book of Odes", one may compare the books and literature written during the similar period with the information in the ancient writings for mutual authentication, which is the so-called "interpretation of classics with classics" or "interpretation of classics with ancient writings". Moreover, the examination and interpretation of "The Book of Odes" changed with each passing day in recent years. This would be somewhat of help to our studies. In view of this, the author selected several difficult words from "The Book of Odes", such as "Liang Pi Wu Wang" in "Ta Ming (大明)", "Ming Chih Wei Li" in "Sang Jou (桑柔)", "No damage (忮) No disaster (咎)" in "Male Pheasant (雄雉)", for in-depth study in order to clarify the true meanings of those odes and restore the true colors of the classic.
