The appraisal of Lin Shu-hua's literary works, generally speaking, has been agreed to define her as one of the "new-traditional literate woman" (新閨秀) authors. In the context of Beijing which passing from traditional despotism to modern Republic of China, this essay concentrates on the living spaces and activities of women in Lin's works. The special experiences of those maidens and young married women of Beijing in Lin's works which are traditional as well as modern will also be scrutinized, raking through the correlation between the life of women and the place/space, inspecting the life of women that are open as well as limited in the modern city. This essay aims to examine how Lin, living in the city Beijing transition from the old to the new, expands the experiences and imaginations of place by the angel of women that are different from men's.
