This study investigates and evaluates the effects of English listening strategies on the listening achievement of Taiwanese freshman learners. The objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of listening techniques for training students to develop sustained listening attention, to increase overall conceptual recall, and to maintain of relevant information in a range of contexts. The findings were as follows: (1) Strategy-focused teaching is more effective than practice-based teaching. There is a significant difference (p<.05) in pretest and posttest comparisons of the scores on the GEPT in listening for the strategy-focused class. (2) Students' willingness to study among students with improved listening ability in strategy-focused classes revealed significant correlation (p<.01) with students' level of participation motivation. (3) Students with improved listening ability in both classes showed significant correlation (p<.01) between level of participation motivation and self-efficacy. This seemed to suggest that, in the present study, students with more confidence in listening performance had higher motivation to join the English class. (4) One of the variables in students' responses to the questions in the questionnaire for learning attitudes, I cannot understand what other classmates say in English, has a significant difference (t=-2.139, p<.05) between the improved and unimproved students among the participants. By experimental study, the results certify that improved listening ability advances L2 learning in the growth of students' self-efficacy, perception in attitudes, and level of participation motivation.
