成就目標是當代研究成就動機主要的理論，Nicholls (1984, 1989)提出的二向度成就目標理論主要以社會認知的觀點，探討在特定成就情境下，個性因素、環境因素和兩因素的交互作用對於成就行爲的影響。Elliot (1999)及Elliot與McGregor (2001)提出的三向度及2×2成就目標理論架構，主要奠基於能力慨念的探討。Nicholls與Elliot對於成就目標的主張並不一致。本文論述各向度成就目標的理論架構和理論相關的量表，並說明能力知覺在各向度成就目標理論中的定位，最後建議未來的研究方向以求成就目標理論更加完善。
