This paper assesses the controversy surrounding ECFA and its effects. First, this study explains the evolution of the East Asian economic integration regime. The paper then analyzes the content of ECFA and the Taiwan government's assessment of its expected effects.. The economic and political controversy in Taiwan over ECFA is then reviewed. Finally, the paper analyzes statistical data to evaluate the effects of ECFA over the one-year period since its signing.
