Among the factors causing the development of Ming Dynasty popular novels, the owners of publishing houses should receive special attention. With the purpose to pursue profit, publishing house owners would publish certain types of novels, which in turn helped form the characteristic of "popular commodity" in Ming novels. Because the economics played an important role in causing the Ming Dynasty popular novel to develop toward the direction of "the literature commercialization," this paper discusses from production and marketing the management strategies Ming dynasty publishing houses used for popular novels: First, this paper inspects, from the publication production angle, the producer and the production work pattern as well as the ways to obtain the biggest profit by reducing the cost. Next, from the market marketing angle, this paper inspects how publishing houses utilized in the novels advertisements, illustrations, and commentaries, etc. to attract the consumers and therefore to pursue the biggest profit. The conclusion is that the Ming Dynasty publishing houses produced and marketed popular novels under market mechanism operation, which positively promoted the popular novels, facilitated their growth, and improved the status and values of popular novels. However, because of the priority of pursuing the commercial interest, the qualities of some novels appeared poor, which inevitably would suppress and twist the creation of fine literary works.
