The purpose of This study is to investigate the situation of the teaching of reading of the elementary school teachers. The sample is 325 Tainan City Elementary School teachers and then offer the conclusion as the followings based on the results of the questionnaire and interview:1. Elementary School teachers were confident to create reading related decoration at classroom and good reading atmosphere for students, but the budget for purchasing books was generally insufficient.2. Elementary School teachers considered the teaching plan for reading course was mainly on living education or events of the students. The number of class was about two to four classed monthly and usually took the flexible curriculum time. The material for teaching the reading often is picture books. The activity for teaching of reading is group reading of the whole class. The strategy most often used is to ask questions and discussion, which mainly used the reading learning sheet to evaluate the learning effects of the students.3. The biggest dilemma of Elementary School teachers confronted was short of the teaching hours. The adaptation and solution to such problem was to cultivate the students with reading interest.
