軟體公司的經營充滿動態與不確定。而小型套裝軟體公司所面臨的市場、競爭與資源等條件,使公司的經營與成長更具挑戰性。相對於小型套裝軟體公司在社會與經濟上所扮演的重要角色,我們對其成長與經營挑戰的了解卻十分有限。本研究的目的即在探討小型套裝軟體公司經營的核心問題,及其成長的特性,並進一步分析管理者的決策如何導致公司之間成長行為的差異。我們以系統動力學(system dynamics)及多個案的方式,探討台灣健保申報軟體公司的成長問題。本研究建立了一個以多個案為基礎的系統動力學模型,包括市場、競爭、顧客、服務、財務、銷售與研發等主要的互動範圍。模型發現並解釋了小型套裝軟體公司為何必須經歷長短期相反的成長動態、揭露成長過程中公司可能遭遇到的陷阱,以及成長政策的差異如何導致不同的成長的結果。最後,本研究針對小型套裝軟體公司提出動態經營架構與政策設計建議,以協助管理者理解及管理公司的成長行為,並且進一步討論本研究在成長理論發展上的意義。
Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of software industry. However, research about the complex survival and growth process that are challenging managers is still limited. Despite the substantial interest and massive empirical research, growth studies have been dominated by analysis of variance using cross-sectional measures to explain differences in growth across firms. This study empirically demonstrates that software firms in a niche market with a relatively short-life cycle may commonly experience performance deficit after a period of growth. In this paper, a system dynamics model is built to capture the essential interactions across industry- and firm-levels. Based on the quantitative simulation model, it shows that whether a software firm can survive or grow may be a far more complex process than simply a matter of variables such as size, age, entrepreneurship, etc. The systemic interactions among firms and the overall market, the essence of vicious and virtuous feedback relationships in managing R&D activities, and the dynamic alignment of short-term and long-term profitability are more important and challenging. Managers should pay attentions to the dynamic alignment of trade-offs and risks that different growth strategies may generate.
