During the Sino-Japanese War, the loyalty, patriotism and courage of ROC Air Force pilots helped the Air Force defeat the enemy and won victories several times. They not only demonstrated the martial virtues and shaped the paradigm of loyalty and courage for the ROC Air Force, simultaneously, they established the Jianqiao Spirit which features“invincibility, adventurous attitude, and defeating superior enemy with inferiority." By reviewing the course of development of ROC Air Force history, this article attempts to introduce the ROCAF martyrs and their stories, and discuss how they carried out and practiced the martial virtues and Jianqiao Spirit. It is then followed by a comparison of current peaceful situation in the Taiwan Strait. In contrast to their predecessors during wartime, current members of the ROC Air Force maintain the glorious heritage and tradition. In recent years, two ROCAF pilots namely colonel Wang Tong-Yi and Chuang Bei-Yuan profoundly fulfilled heroic deeds by sacrificing their lives in order to save the people on the ground. Their valiant stories can be proudly manifested to the world. Their fulfillment of martial virtues not only glorifies the Jianqiao Spirit of ROCAF, but has turned another page by evolving the Jianqiao Spirit into the Gangshan Spirit. Finally, with the integration of current cross-strait situation, this study emphasizes the importance of fundamental education in terms of the rules of law, ethics, historic role models, cross-strait situation and measures of counterintelligence. It is hoped that the members of the ROC Air Force can learn and inherit the Jianqiao Spirit in the past featuring loyalty and courage, therefore the Gangshan Spirit in the new era can be practiced in the future in order to defend the country and underpin the martial virtues and faith for the ROCAF.
