Ryūnosuke Akutagawastudied in the English department of Tokyo Imperial University. He taught at the Naval Engineering School in Yokosuka, Kanagawa as an English language instructor after graduation. Nevertheless, he didnt pay the West in his lifetime. Just as those who imagine and delineate China by way of Chinese classical literature, Akutagawa came to know the West by way of Western literature as well. His once - in - a - lifetime oversea traveling, the trip to China, became his only opportunity of getting the knowledge (misconception, though) of the West. In this paper, I focus on Akutagawas works written before and after his trip to China. I try to elaborate on Akutagawas creative intent of choosing the modern Chinese cities, Shanghai and Wuqing, as the backdrops of his literary texts. I also want to explicate how Akutagawa represented anew the Westartistic "way from the standpoint of the land beyond Japan."
