《戒殺畫集》二十幾幅，原為弘一法師祝五十壽，後改名《護生畫集》，並增至四百五十幅，字畫原稿總共九百件，收藏在浙江省博物館。今在臺灣佛光山的佛陀紀念館風雨走廊，有彩色護生浮雕畫七十二幅，對於禮佛香客、校外教學而言，都是最佳的生命教育教材，讓人產生慈悲心，進而惜物、護生、戒殺。弘一法師主張《護生畫集》為通俗之藝術品，所以應以優美柔和之情調，令閱者生起悽涼悲憫之感想。因為優美之作品，能耐人尋味，如食橄欖然。所以他對於題材內容，煞費苦心，再三斟酌，不僅囑咐豐子愷修改畫幅，他自己的詩作，也幾經修改。這種尊重生命的教育，正是本文列為重點探討的指標，也期許對當今社會的人文素養有提昇之效。
