Knowledgeable, learned and talented, Su Shi was a pioneer, creating new styles in one school of Chinese literature and one school of art. However, being straightfoward, outspoken and stubborn, he stuck up to righteousness, which got him involved in a political strife that led to the fatal Wu Tai Poem Case. Fortunately, he escaped narrowly. After having gone through the valley of death, Su Shi came to Huangzhou as a new leaf. He must have come to understand the value and the meaning of life, and must have held a new attitude toward it. In fact, while sent into exile in Huangzhou, Su Shi accomplished a lot of famous poems passed down in history, and became more mature in the wake of all political clashes. Apparently, his literary works witnessed his transformation. Hence, we can say Huangzhou represents a new start to Su Shi. The thesis is mainly to study his thinking and life through his works created during this period, and thus realize how he conceives his own philosophy of life by which to be confronted with the subsequent adversity.
