The outbreak of “COVID-19” from Wuhan (China) in December 2019 spread
rapidly around the world, causing heavy casualties. In January 2020, Taiwan
intended to evacuate its citizens from China, but the gaps in the positions of the
two sides of the Taiwan Strait caused constant turmoil, which even resulted in
a high degree of political confrontation between the two sides. Moreover, the
close cooperation between Taiwan and the United States in pandemic prevention
has caused a high level of dissatisfaction in China. In May 2021, Taiwan
encountered the invasion of “variant virus,” which threatened the pandemic
prevention achievements of “zero diagnosis” for more than a year and resulted
in an urgent need for vaccines. The lack of vaccines in Taiwan caused public
dissatisfaction. The opposition party sternly criticized it and even called for the
import of vaccines made in China. This situation made Japan and the U.S. rapidly
donate many vaccines to Taiwan in June to consolidate public opinion. Taiwan
also intended to purchase the BNT vaccine made in Germany, however, due to
China’s political obstruction, Taiwan failed to procure it. Eventually, with the
assistance of international intervention and the support of Taiwan government,
Hon Hai Precision Industry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and Buddhist
Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation successfully purchased the BNT vaccine
to meet the urgent need. Taiwan’s pandemic prevention achievements were highly
recognized internationally, making the G7 member states openly support Taiwan’s
participation in the WHA in 2021, and the U.S. was even more supportive. Since
the anti-pandemic measures during Presidency of Tsai Ing-wen in the past two
years won public support, more than 55% of respondents in the polls affirmed her
political achievements.
