The present experiment was carried to investigate effects of language structure and intertrial interval (ITI) on the speed of silent reading. The subjects consisted of 40 volunteer students takingthe course of experimental psychology. Twenty subiects were from Chung-Yuan Christian College of Science and Engineering, Taiwan. The other 20 were from Universitat Dusseldorf, West Germany. The subjects read silently from 1 to 100 under the two conditions of ITI 10 sees and 60 sees. The results showed that the speed of silent reading was slower when using German than when using Chinese. Under the condition of ITI 10 sec, the speed of silent reading was found to decrease asthe number of trials increased.
