Followng Almond and Verba, Thompson, etc. We assume that the successful functioning of a democratic system of government requires citizens imbued with democratic values and committed to democratic norms; and such values and norms are cultivated through the socialization process. In our country, the period of formal schooling is of vital importance in such socialization, particularly the junior high school years. During those years, a child is exposed to overt political socialization through civics courses for the first time in his life, therefore the impact is bound to be quite significant and lasting. And since for quite a large number of citizens, forma; schooling ends with graduation of junior high school political socialization is of major importance for our society. This study attempts to analyze how our educators try to mould our citizens in order to make them fit for democratic citizenship and to evaluate the degree of success of our education through an analysis of the standard civics textbooks of our junior high schools.
