A six-month journal cancellatoin study was conducted at the Union Chemical Laboratory Library in Hsin-chu, Taiwan, R.O.C. This study was based on a systematic and multifaceted decision mode to judge the worth of a journal, which was evaluated by two criteria, summation of six journal weighting factors and cost-effectiveness analysis. Six journal weighting factors are usage, research-relatedness, possibility of subscription elsewhere, coverage by indexing/abstracting services, impact factor (citation frequency) and inclusiveness in a major journal list edited by the experts in Chemistry. The total of these weighting factors divided by the journal subscription price was journal cost-effectiveness ratio. The selection and deselection of journal subscription can be decided by the total weights of a journal or by the cost-effectiveness ratio, depending on the budget allowance.
