Reading for pleasure not only makes primary school children have a happy childhood, but also strengthens their reading ability, learning ability, and adaptability to a new environment. It is influential for their future development. In order to effectively promote reading for pleasure, it is necessary to understand the actual situation in which they read for pleasure. A study aimed at this was conducted by using questionnaires produced by the writer. The subjects, boys and girls in grades 3 through 6, were selected from ten primary schools in Taipei. Five of them were in the city, and the other five in the suburbs of Taipei. A total of 928 questionaires were distributed and returned duringthe months of September and October 1991. The study discusses children's favorite categories of reading materials, the sources, the places, the time and the ways they read for pleasure. It also discusses the similarities and differences made by sex, grade, and region with respect to all of the items mentioned above. The study serves as a reference for those who intend to encourage pri-mary school students to read for pleasure. When students are more interested in reading, it would help to improve the quality of our people, and our society. Our country as well as the people living in it will be benefited.
