This paper is based mainly on Miss Huang's 1985 study--The Survey of the Attitude and Opinion of Academic Librarians in Taiwan toward Continuing Education, however, additional materials (1986-1993) are supplemented to up date and expand the content. It begins with a discussion of the importance of continuing education, factors may affect it as well as the librarian's need for continuing education--its programs, implementation, incentives, and etc. The major part of this paper is devoted to a general description of the state of the continuing education received by professional and nonprofessional library staff in the Taiwan region in the past 40 years, provided with tabulated statistics of continuing education workshops regularly conducted by the Library Association of China and other libraries. It also offers a list of continuing education programs sponsored by various governmental agencies since 1986. The concluding part is summary of authors suggestions for future improvement.
