本研究取材自行政院主計處一九八八年十二月份勞動力調查中之5,046名65歲以上老人之訪問資料，分析結果顯示老人被詢及對目前居住安排之觀感時，他們的評價並不侷限於對居住之需求。事實上，評價的範圍涵蓋基本的生活需求包括經濟保障，健康狀況及親屬為伴。在台灣這種現代化中國社會，經濟來頭是子女供養載自己的資源，老人都會覺得滿意。不過，祇與子女同居，並不符合老人的需求。一般而言，與子女及配偶同居，健康狀況良好，也有經濟保障，老人就會滿足於目前的居住安排。我們也發現，相當高比倒的獨居或祇與配偶同居的老人，他們也對目前的居住安排感到滿意，此類老人大都比較年輕，教育程度較高，男性，健康狀況良好，也具有獨立的經濟能力。我們認為這是較現代化的一群，是社會現代化的產物。
