As governmental, academic, and corporate organizationsprepare themselves for accessing theinformation superhighway, it becomes clear that there has been littleplanning about what to do about thehuge quantities of unevaluated andperhaps unwanted information whichthreatens to engulf the unsuspectinguser. The development of information intermediaries, or meatwarespecialists, who can be trusted toshield the end user from informationhe does not want and that will onlywaste his time, is already on thehorizon. However, it is not certainwhat role librarians will play in thisprocess of giving the user the important and shielding him from thetrivial.
