R.O.C. started to experiment with library automation inearly 1970s, and in 1980s had severalsystems already in operation. Andin 1990s many more libraries joinedthe automation bandwagon and acquired automated systems. Bookform catalogs and union periodicallists were also produced by computers. Online reference databaseservices and online shared catalogingbecame reality thanks to the adventof digital communication networks, and to Taiwan Academic Network (TANet) in particular. National Central Library (NCL) used computersextensively in its internal operationand external services. The latestadditions were two much neededChinese bibliographic database CDROMs. Despite all these achievements, we also have problems. Thispaper review's the development oflibrary automation and networkingin this country critically, and comments on various issues.
