Wang Yu-cheng(954-1001 AD) was the most renowned poet writing during the early years of the Sung Dynasty. Writing in the style of Pal Chu-yi, which was popular at the time, Wang's poetry was simple, natural, and easy to understand. In content, Wang sought to express the life-style and customs of ordinary people, again reflecting the view of Pal Chu-i. In his artistic expression, Wang used both praise and sarcasm to show his views of the justice and injustice he found in life. On the other hand, he atso inherited the realistic spirit of the poetry of Tu Fu; he used his poems to depict reality and his concern for humanity. Wang Yu-cheng's poems characteristically' 1.represent the realistic spirit. 2.represent various styles of poetry including foik songs. 3.often use the method and structure of prose-poetry, and are the precursor of prose-poetry in the Sung dynasty. 4.tend toward dense discourse, paving the way for She "discourse as poetry" of Ou Yang-shou and Su Tung-pou. 5.use metaphor and express Wang's heart-felt hope and deep sadness. Wang Yu-cheng stressed "Confucian doctrine and moral nature" in his poetry and expressed this view through his plain, graceful style in order to promote reform in society. Wang Yu-cheng's poetry and literature theory had a deep influence on the poetry of the Sung dynasty. Wu Zi-cheng stated the "Wang Yu-cheng was the originator of Sung poetry" and that he enabled Ou Yang-shou to continue to develop his poetic style. Wang can be considered the pioneer of Sung dynasty poetry, later influencing Ou and Su. His spirit and achievement deserve to be recognized and acclaimed.
